Hey Dee Dee,

In a word Folder Actions suck.

They're a great idea, but I've never found them to be reliable enough for a real workflow.

I am finally committed to dealing with this problem on the systems I oversee

If your budget can stand it I'd look into Hazel ($29.00 US).

Script Timer is only $12.00 US.

If you need a free solution you could probably use launchd to drive an AppleScript applet or Automator workflow.

Personally I'd probably use a timed trigger in Keyboard Maestro.

So now that I am ready to deal with this, first, if there is some correction I need to do to end the crazy names galore behavior

Eh?  Crazy names?

Otherwise, I considered that I may need to abandon Folder Actions and script the specific duplicating and renaming of the files.  Not the end of the world.

That might not be a bad idea, but without automation or a reminder it can be hard to remember to do.

The other thing is that I need to clean up the names on the maybe 500+ files that have the super names.

From what to what?

I'd probably just write a script, but I own Name Mangler and A Better Finder Rename for the really crazy stuff.

Is it time to abandon Automator?

I've never liked Automator and positively hate to use it.

Chris
