folder actions revisited

Greetings.

So back in Jan/Feb 2014 there was a discussion on this list regarding problems people were experiencing with folder actions behaving badly after upgrading to Mavericks. Specifically, there was a problem with folder actions that rename files, appending the new name repeatedly to the maximum file name size. I never saw any posted solution.

I am finally committed to dealing with this problem on the systems I oversee — of course I have an entire 18 months worth of at least 1 file per day that has suffered the long name plague. hahaha.

The systems I am working on are all running Mavericks 10.9.5.
We use the folder actions to rename files we drop into our “archive” folders.
Originally (before Mavericks), I set up some automator workflows and folder actions that did exactly what we needed to happen: each day the file was copied from the source folder to the archive folder and renamed, changing the name to reflect the creation date of the file in the format: “YYYYMMDD_” plus the extension. Pretty simple stuff.

So now that I am ready to deal with this, first, if there is some correction I need to do to end the crazy names galore behavior, if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be incredibly grateful.

Otherwise, I considered that I may need to abandon Folder Actions and script the specific duplicating and renaming of the files. Not the end of the world.

The other thing is that I need to clean up the names on the maybe 500+ files that have the super names.

Is it time to abandon Automator? (Automator is fun and quick, but I suspect is causes me more than a few phantom problems.) I have already replaced many of the former automator workflows and calendar alarms with applescript applets.

So basically, I am looking for wisdom and advice.
Thank you for any pointers. Clearly, I am an extreme novice with Applescript (or any coding).
Dee Dee
