I understand that, but I'm surprised (and not really convinced) that there
is not an OS routine that converts a correctly formatted date string to an
date.

I wouldn't say I'm banging on about it. I complained when all those
scripts broke a few years ago, and joined the conversation now when it
comes up again.
It's OK for people to complain.
