Well I think dates generally suck on the command line too, and lots of I/O stuff strikes me as inconsistent. I prefer POSIX paths, but inconsistencies with things like expansion of ~/ drive me potty. So I suspect the key phrase is "coming from" -- the familiar always looks simpler.

But here's a challenge. Pick any one of the topics -- strings, dates, lists, maths, file I/O, or whatever -- and tells us what this mythical StandardLib should offer in that area.
