If you mean AppleScipt in its minimal form, with no help from scripting additions, shell stuff or Cocoa, then I think it's better to say so. Of course you can get very little done with that -- you need at least Standard Additions. Once you allow that, other limitations are essentially arbitrary.
Not that there's anything wrong with arbitrary limitations, either as an exercise, or as a practical consideration in terms of things like deployment targets. But let's not try to put lipstick on the pig by conferring it with terms like "pure", and going all nostalgic.
AppleScript was designed as a minimal language, unable to do much itself. Its usefulness was its ability to take advantage of the power of external identities in the form of applications. Now those external entities also include shell commands and Cocoa. I see a continuing theme, not some loss of purity.
