Option-f is not intercepted or interpreted by the system as a command. It just types a unicode italics f character. But if you try to type the character by executing an AppleScript script that sends a 'keystroke' Apple event, the act of launching the script usually sends any receiving active text field into the background, which makes it inactive so that the typed italics f character won't be entered. I think you can avoid sending the text field to the background by executing the script from the Scripts menu, or something like that. The OP made it clear later that he was in fact trying to type the character, but he found the alternative approach that I and others suggested to be more useful for his purposes.

I get all that, what I don't get is why the option-f and command-f behavior of the script he's reporting is the opposite of the option-f and command-f expected behavior.

Option-f shouldn't trigger a find. That should only be command-f.

I'm just curious about that.
