But it could have been worse, much worse.
Federighi could have responded with: "Sorry, but AppleScript will be depreciated in one year, and macOS inter-app scripting will be terminated."
He did NOT say that.
With no other real information available to us, it seems to me that we can:
- Protest via email, bug reports, petitions, etc.
- Not lose our heads until we know more.

Nope, Federighi is simply confirming current Automation technologies
will be switching to the Official Legacy Track, where Apple can quietly
leave simple inertia to roll them peacefully to the end of their lifecycle.
