Smile is more exactly described as a set of bridges to several technologies any Mac brings to you, and also to some other ones.

Those include: Quartz to make PDFs, Unix sockets to support CGI calls, Webkit to open web browser windows, Searchkit to allow building and using search dictionaries, a powerful XML library, Plists, sending emails, Unicode Regular Expressions, and files handling.
