It is amazing just how much of a web site you can put into 5 MB of server
space. I'll bet that even some of the larger MUG sites are less than 5MB.
Most HTML pages use a small amount of k. It is the graphics that can eat up
server space. There are ways to reduce the size of graphics as well. If you
use the same graphic, your group's logo for example, on every page of your
site, it only appears once in your ftp area.
It is when you add files to download that your server space takes on the
MB's. Placing your .pdf newsletter's take a healthy bite into your MB's. They
are very important for the group but, if they were placed in your web area as
HTML documents, they would take up a lot less space. If you use most page
layout programs to create your newsletter, you can export them to HTML
documents.
Use links to shareware files downloadable on the author's web site rather
than placing them on your server space. It assures your members of getting
the latest version and you don't have to ear up your MB's.

NOTE: A wee OT
Dan/Chris,
We contacted our local Ma & Pa ISP and they gave us 5MB (more than ample
for us and we have 8 or so pages) in exchange for placing their
logo/link on our home page and newsletter. No CGI-bins, et al. Just some
free server space.
As for email, I just do a "
mailto:" to the user who would be responsible
for answering the question in question.
