My MUG is a fairly small one -- about 200 members. We have our own domain,
which is hosted by Earthlink for $20/mo. Our domain mailbox gives us all the
mailboxes we need, and we run our listservs through it, too. But we use our
iDisk (and one of Apple's file-sharing Homepages) to give members access to
a variety of files, such as PDFs of class handouts. (That alone probably
saves us $50/year in printing and copying fees.)
We use it for photo album pages of special events: holiday parties, a "field
trip" to the new Apple store, etc. (Those photo page templates are great.)
And to make nice email invitations and meeting notices. We could do all that
without iTools, of course, but not as quickly and easily. And since it's a
non-profit MUG run by volunteers, quick and easy is very important.
For example, with iTools, and now .Mac, those special webpages don't have to
be done by the webmaster (me). Other people -- the chairperson of the event,
for example -- can do them. All I have to do is add the link to our main
site.
My guess is our board will decide that at $50/month, .Mac will be worth the
price for us. If we need to cut expenses, we'd be more likely to give up the
hosted domain, since very few members know how to maintain it.
