This is a link I had never heard of and I thank you for sharing it, Randy
Marshall! Excellent articles by Dan Oblak.
I found the below article especially interesting:
>
Perspective is King: "Listen up, Apple: It's time to stop marketing to Martha
Stewart, and start trying to reach the Tim Taylors. It's time to change the
company you keep."
<getting out my can opener to open the can of worms>
I love Apple's new ads, but I have to agree with the above statement. How
does the average, low end, non-PowerUser, relate to these ads for their
everyday computing experience, since the ads are mainly targeting the
professional user? I think if Apple had better marketing strategy that this
would result in a larger market share for Apple, and eventually Apple could
reduce the price even more to the average consumer on their hardware, which
would increase the market shares. Ever watch the AOL ads? They are geared
to the "common folk" ... that's why they are so huge!
Apple has done an excellent job on reducing prices on almost all the Mac's,
but money is a major factor for 98% of the people. It's part of what
prohibits people from upgrading to the newest OS, not to mention upgrading
Adobe, MS, Quark, printers, scanners, etc.. It's what stops me from having
that brand new G4 desktop and new TiBook (or even iBook). It's cheaper for
me to keep upgrading until I can't cram anything else in my poor Mac's. Even
$1000. dollars (US) is a lot of money to most, no matter what you are
spending it on.
*WE* all know that Apple makes the very best computer ... ever! However,
it's difficult to explain this to the "average" first time buyer, or those
looking for a more up-to-date system, that has simple needs (surfing, email,
greeting cards), as to why they should pay "more money" (their words - not
mine) for a Mac "when they can get a complete PC system for around
$500-600., with 17" monitor and ext. burner included". Yes, *WE* know that
is a garbage system, and that you get what you pay for, but I'm talking
about the low end, financially challenged user, that make up the majority of
all computer users that "just want a computer".
What do you feel, as UG leaders/members, we can do to help convince this
person that they "need OS X and a new G4"? Every time I talk to a member
with a non-G3, the #1 reason they don't upgrade is: money.
I still feel that Apple need to lighten up their licensing policy, and allow
User Groups to help update their members Mac's on older OS's. Not full OS's
that you had to purchase, I'm just talking about "updates" that are free on
Apple's website (keeping in mind that the majority of the world is not on
DSL or cable modems, as well as those that do not have "free unlimited"
internet access).
