At the risk of resurrecting this whole debate:

A large percentage of these "deserters" were the people that Apple
wanted rid of anyway. The non-Mac users, the software pirates, the
people abusing the service. There was also a trend for people to have
multiple accounts - I know one guy who had SIX .Mac accounts. How many
Macs did he have? None. It's his (and people like him) who are
responsible for the loss of the free iTools service.
Here's some choice quotes from:
http://www.powerpage.org/story.lasso?newsID=9958
"A 5% conversion rate from a free to a paid service is not bad at all.
There are many defunct dot-coms that would still be around if they
could have achieved anything near that rate."
"Was there really 2.2 million iTools users, or just that many accounts?
I had 2 accounts myself and I know a lot of people had more than one.
If there were an average of 2 accounts per person, that would leave a
conversion rate around 10%."
"I had 27 accounts, myself. I recently converted the most valuable one
and am indeed thrilled with the seamless backup utility. I also plan to
upgrade my disk space within the next 3 months or so."
I look at .Mac the way I look at a new Powerbook, external cool
speakers, a bluetooth adapter...if it's worth it to you then buy it, if
not then don't. Don't complain that support for them is built into the
OS or that it's not free.
