We "broke down" purchased a new Projector last year to replace one that was
showing it's age and what a difference it makes at the meetings. Presenters
feel more comfortable because the attention is focused away from them all
the time and periodically on the screen. Most newer iBooks and TiBooks
support video out and all of us "presenters" usually use our own Macs or set
them up ahead of time for those who present without the aid of a Portable.
Keynote (which was available to User Groups on a past Apple Sales Web CD)
also makes presenting much more fun and easy. I recently did my first
presentation with Keynote on my iBook a few months ago and was horrified
when I forgot that iBooks don't support multiple monitors/displays so all my
little footnotes to guide me were useless (unless I wanted the crowd to read
my little notes) but I survived.
I also agree that renting out the projector is a bad idea, more wear and
tear and possibility of damage. Epson makes one in the $1000 range that is
quite nice.
We passed a fish bowl and asked for extra donations for many months to fund
the projector (we aren't allowed to have raffles or "games of chance" at our
current meeting location). If everyone puts in a few bucks at every meeting
the total could be reached in no time. Our goal was to reach half the cost
with member donations and the group would fund the other half from our
treasury (which made the goal more easily obtainable).
Also selling donated equipment is a good way to fund a projector. Ask
members to bring in unwanted or unused items and do a mini garage sale. Tell
members that the asking price is X but all of this money goes toward buying
"our projector". A old book or scsi zip drive that was unwanted may become a
$10 or $25 donation to the fund.
