We used to do reviews but becuase the geniuses on our Board decided on a
501(C)(7) tax ID, we can only solicit donations if we tell the donars that they
CANNOT deduct their donation for tax purposes to a non-profit group.
In the past, before they fixed things, we'd get software or hardware and I
(as the editor of the newsletter) would try it and review it. I would send a
copy of the newsletter the review appeared in to the mfg.
Then I would donate the unregistered copy to the club for an auction/fund
raiser.
If a member volunteered to do the review, I would always withhold the
registration code until AFTER they gave me 500 words.
Their review had to be literate and grammatically correct. They could love it
or hate it. I didn't care but they'd have to say the who, what, where, when
and why they feel that way.
The outline I gave them is
1 - Describe what the product is supposed to do - The Mfg's website is good
for this info.
2 - Describe your Mac system that you are trying to install the product on -
OS, model, processor, & RAM at a minimum
3 - List minimum requirements listed for that product. Inclide suggested Mfg.
suggested retail price.
4 - Describe installation experience - bugs, glitches and what you did to
overcome them - Or smooth and easy like it should on a Mac.
5 - Describe use experience - EXACTLY how did you use this product.
6 - Overall impressions - Did product do what it was supposed to do. What
would you change to make it better or not suck as much? Try to be supportive of
Mac developers... we need them as much as they need us.
7 - Give recommendation, like on a scale of 1 to 10 its a 7... or two thumbs
up... Tucows a'mooooing (silly reads very nicely, you know).
My above description is already over 125 words. They had to provide another
375 on their own.
I required the review within 60 of them getting it. If they didn't, I'd camp
on their doorstep and get it back.
Then I would do the review myself. This way I'd have it done witnin 90 days
of getting the product.
