I have heard this question many times. Everyone has a response, nobody has an
answer. 8)
Some groups hold the registration card until the software is reviewed. In
most groups once the review is made, the reviewer gets to keep the book or
software. If you are lucky enough to get hardware to review, the companies usually
asks for the hardware back but lets the reviewer purchase it at a discount.
Getting reviewers is near impossible, so we don't ask for items until we have
a reviewer to go threw the process. Some companies send unsolicited items. We
use them as door prizes.
Do the vendors care or keep notes? You bet they do. Rye of Adobe won't send a
group software if they are delinquent in their reviews. If John Smith
requested PhotoShop 3 way back when and didn't send in a review, the group may have
to track him and get the review done before Adobe sends another product to that
group.
Unfortunately some groups have a give me mentality. Give me, give me, give
me. They want anything they can get and give little in return. I see that a lot
at Macworld. People leaving the floor with bags of buttons and bags of
product. I understand that many groups use Macworld to get T-shirts,
sample products and the like for group door prizes. I do the same for my group, it
is just that some people have no limits.
