The topic of computers at MUG meetings is a very interesting one. I am
the Vice President of the Rochester Institute of Technology User Group
(We call ourselves MacRIT). In a college zone, many of us have
laptops, ranging from old Wallstreets, Toliet Seat iBooks, ice iBook or
Titanium PowerBooks. There is always enough laptops so we normally
will hook one or two people's computer up to an overhead display.
Normally the software issue is not a problem. With the educational
discounts that we receive we clearly take advantage of that.
What i really would like to bring to the table is the problem of using
computers at meeting. Although they can be a great advantage
especially when doing presentations, portable computers also represent
a huge downfall in my MUG. Many people want to come to the MUG
meeting, but will bring their computer and absorb themselves in some
other computer based activity. On the RIT campus, we are blessed with
802.11b wireless access points throughout the campus, which gives
students and faculty to the ability to jump online virtually anywhere.
So, my question the the AUGD board is basically, what would you do
about people bringing their own personal computers and using them at
meetings? Do you feel it is polite, rude? What rules would you
enforce to keep the meeting running smoothly through direct human
communication than rather through the use of computers.
