Unless your meeting topic has something to do with an online resource
that might benefit from having individuals follow along directly, it is
clearly rude to the speaker who has taken the time and trouble to prepare
the program.
How about the same request that you hear at so many events now: "As a
courtesy to the presenter and to other members of the audience, please
turn off all cell phones and computers for the duration of the presentation."
Also, a couple paragraphs in your newsletter and a short explanation of
WHY such behavior is rude at the beginning of each meeting might help
raise awareness.
