I think I'd have to throw my hat into the ring of not buying a computer
for the club - unless no one in the group has one they could bring. If
this is the case, then yes, I think the group should invest.
We've had the good luck of several on the board having a laptop. I've
got the oldest - g3 400 powerbook, which makes it difficult for me to
play movies & mirror to the projector, but we've also got a couple of
newer powerbooks, so it's just a matter of switching the projector cord
from one to the other if we do need to play a movie.
I like bringing my own machine if I'm doing the presentation because I
know it works and I'm familiar with how the settings are set. I
actually have a 2nd user account set up for Jomacs so people don't have
to deal with my personal desktop & files. Also, when you leave too much
to set up & install at the last minute it leaves a huge margin of error
for those "oh .............!!" moments where you've got to scramble and
punt to pull your program off.
When we have guest presenters come in, we give them the option of
bringing their own system, or we'll provide one of ours. If they're
demoing software, we get a copy ahead of time and install it. They just
bring their part of the program on CD, plug in & run.
I agree with the call to save & buy a projector. That's what we did
last year. Before the days when we had a projector, we hooked up to a
TV. With memories of a roomful of people straining to see the blurry
TV, it wasn't hard to raise $$ to get a used projector off of eBay (we
found a great, small, wonderfully portable one for about $1000, so you
don't have to spend a mint). During our fundraising months, we borrowed
a projector and constantly reminded people it was borrowed & we wanted
our own.
