At least ConceptDraw makes an effort to open Visio and (I'm told),
OmniGraffle will be adding Visio import and export. While I was still
with Nortel I used Omnigraffle exclusively for diagramming and people
did notice the difference between my lovingly crafted diagrams and the
hacked together diagrams from Visio users.
At work, I am able to easily transfer files from Compaq Armada M700 to
any
other Compaq Armada M700 using the built in Infrared ports, yet when I
get
home I don't seem to be able to get my Armada to "talk" to my iMac's
Infrared
port.
Part of the problem here is the change in port usage. It used to be
that a Mac IR port was treated like an ethernet port - you could run IP
or Appletalk over IrDA. In Mac OS X they treat the port as a serial
port. It's been so long since I used IR on a PC that I can't remember
what way they handle it but I seem to recall it's also like a serial
port. Essentially you need to set them to the same speed and then use a
protocol on top of that to share files. I'd suggest Kermit or Zmodem
just because they are what I have used in the past.
If someone could make that easier, it would really help because I have
so far not found a way to get the iMac talking to the Compaq over an
Ethernet
connection. That's probably because our IT people have locked up some
aspect
of the Network Control Panel on our Compaq's.
I'm assuming you're using Mac OS X. I'm guessing that you use Windows
NT/2000/XP so open a command prompt window and type: ipconfig
This will spit out your PCs IP configuration. Mimic the numbers on your
Mac and increment the last one in the "IP address" by 1. Keep the
subnet mask the same.
Connect them with a crossover cable (or a straight thru if you have a
auto-MDI-X port) and turn on the FTP server on the iMac. Then open
Explorer on the PC and put in ftp:// followied by the IP address of the
iMac. It should connect.
If you want to talk more about this, email me privately, join a nimug
discussion (it's open) or iChat me.
