Not from this end.
Windows does the messenger thing:
1. it's good
2. Mac OS doesn't have it, please accept it
I accept that MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger have more features on
Windows. But I was only addressing the "launch at login with no
windows" which both Yahoo and MSN will do on Mac OS X with a minimum of
fuss.
3. the "deamons" or "tasks" in Windows take up a fraction of the
processor time compared to the full app
Without substantive analysis of the processing used, you can't make a
statement like this.
You cannot justify Apple's ignoring the Mac games market because of the
consoles because some games are best played on computers (strategy) and
this is a very silly excuse for simply supporting Apple's actions.
I have not justified Apple's actions. I believe that Apple should have
been more pro-active in this area and made sure that the Mac had
compelling games the way they are ensuring that they have other
compelling applications in the "digital media" arena.
The fact is that Apple is not pursuing the gaming market and the
primary reason is the rise of the consoles. They, in some cases, exceed
the gaming ability (in terms of hardware) of the currently shipping
Macs.
Every game on the Mac is the work of people outside Apple. It's their
blood, sweat and tears that go into the porting, the publishing, the
marketing, the shipping. In some cases, Apple has done the decent thing
and helped a little with, for example, USB-HID drivers but, using the
steering wheels for driving games as an example, force feedback only
arrived with 10.2.3. Waaaay behind the curve and as a result of
developer lobbying.
I've also brought up the subject of MUG support. We've had zero help
from Apple for our MUG but Feral Interactive have been extremely
pro-active in their promotions for our MUG.
We are all Mac users, passionate about our computers but I'm afraid we
must accept the shortcomings of our systems and this is what exactly
this debate is about.
I addressed the MSN thing because it wasn't acknowledged that these
applications can launch at startup and without windows and provide some
feedback through their Dock icon (not enough but that's not the issue).
It was just information that might be useful to members of a MUG -
especially switchers.
