I do not know if anyone has tried this, but....
I have successfully used internships and apprenticeships to
build a wider base on involvement. This prevents the total
fiefdom syndrome and creates a larger pool of qualified
people to work with.
I learned this from growing up in theater, but I also saw it
in strong example at the Cascade Bicycle Club. Put that in
a search engine and see what they are doing.
One of key factors is reward and recognition. In Cascade,
if you lead a ride within a quarter, you received an
invitation to a ride leader lunch where you received
T-shirts, patches, and for those that lead 5 rides, a wind
jacket with Ride Leader and the Cascade logo stenciled on
along with the dates.
I used this in many different settings and have always built
up a pool of willing and experienced volunteers. So I
offer this as a starting point. Every situation is unique
with a few themes - especially with users groups that occur
time and time again.
It is happening in my own group, but I need to stand on the
sidelines - heated politics reared up and created an
environment that wasn't open to change. You cannot force
ideas. This needs to be a carrot, lots of small carrots.
Well that covers the starting point. Has anyone else out
there tried this? Results?
David
