I personally have not run a SIG but have seen others in my UG do it back
when we had weekly meetings for our SIGS (we had 2 sigs, a General Meeting
and a Board Meeting so meetings were pretty much every week back in the
day). Although we don9t have a Digital Photo SIG, in a recent survey we
found that Digital Photography was one of the highest ranking topics in
interest. We catered/catering a lot of our meetings toward that topic as of
late. How about demos on iPhoto, Photoshop Elements, Graphic Converter,
Photoshop proper and the Tons of shareware relating to Photography?
Guest Speakers are usually ALWAYS better than seeing the same old UG Leaders
getting up there and showing their skills (but UG leaders/speakers are
usually under appreciated, so don9t take them for granted).
Check your area for Different REPS from various companies. Our Vice
President9s day job is working for Kodak Digital and he represents Kodak
cameras in Best Buys, WalMarts, CompUSA, etc. There should be a rep in your
area that may be able to come out and speak to your group (and hopefully
convince them that Kodak sells GREAT CAMERAS like he did with me and our
group).
Epson also has Reps that call on stores and if your group is large enough
(Epson likes 200 or more members) they may also provide a speaker. Good for
talking about output after taking those Photos.
Local camera shops and real Film photographers may give a good demo on how
to take Good Pictures. How about bringing in a Wedding Photographer to show
how to take pictures of people/events? Who handles the High School
Graduation Pictures in your town? You could even invite the camera salesmen
at CompUSA or Best Buy to give quick demos about some of the products they
carry (media readers/cards, etc).
If you run out of Topics for the SIG you could always revert to show and
tell with the 3would be2 photographers showing off their best shots.
Just my two pennies....
