Michael,
Our user group, CVMUG (Conejo Ventura Mac User Group), has been doing a
Digital Photography SIG since February. We meet the 3rd Thursday every
month for 2 hours beginning at 7 PM.
We have two people (both board members of CVMUG) who take turns leading
the group. One is a professional photographer, and really know a great
deal. He can give advice on cameras, photo formats, lighting, etc.
The other is a Photoshop expert who covers a lot about digital
manipulation of photos.
In our early meetings, it was pretty unstructured, as we were finding
our way. It took a couple of meetings to figure out what would fit the
needs of our group. We got questions about things like how to prep a
photo for e-mail, or posting on the web. And questions about use of
flash, how to set up lighting to take a portrait, etc.
Over time, as people seem to be more comfortable with using their
cameras, they now want more on manipulating the photos. How to make an
image clearer, adjusting color, levels, dodging and burning color,
masking, compositing, etc. We will get into photo retouching, too.
Lately, we have been doing themes. One meeting, we had folks bring
their digital photos of flowers on CD, so we could put them in computer
and show tips to improve them on the projector screen . Another
meeting, it was photos of sunsets. Recently, we did landscapes. In
addition to the photos brought by the group, our professional photog
would show a couple of his photos on that subject and how he made them
better.
Both of us who lead the group use Photoshop, and we also demo a lot of
adjustments in Photoshop Elements. We have had a guest speaker demo
iPhoto features, and will probably get a guest speaker to cover Graphic
Converter's features, when we can find someone willing.
I hope this helps. I don't think you can do anything wrong. The
members who are interested in the topic will usually hang in there, as
you figure out what the group in interested in.
Good luck,

Greetings Everyone,
I have a great topic for discussion and can't wait to see where this
leads.
I have been involved with a few SIGS over the years, but find myself
starting a brand new SIG.
We have so many people who are interested in Digital Photography that
we
have had great interest in making a SIG for it.
So I volunteered to lead it and my first meeting is at the end of
October.
I have some questions I am hoping those learned SIG leaders out there
can
help me out ;)
How do you run your SIGS? Is there a structure to it? Is there a
lesson or
a topic for each meeting? Is your SIG just sort of a "winging it"
atmosphere? Do you ever have guest speakers?
Ideas? Suggestions?
I have seen SIGs that were some of the above, and only a few seem
really
successful. I just want to offer something interesting to the people
who
come out to this SIG and not look like I don9t know what I am doing
(which
there is a little truth to that right now!)
So SIG leaders...care to share some insight for those that need help in
starting a SIG?
Thanks,
Mike
