My Mac Doctor (a friend here in Newport, Oregon) and I attended the
Washington Square (Portland) opening last November...a three-hour trip
-- each way -- for us. We actually went in separate cars with our
respective spouses who are always 'up' for any shopping experience.
We arrived about 9:15 a.m. for the 10:00 a.m. opening and the line was
already snaked back and forth, about 100 people. We waited for about an
hour and a half to get in but it was well worth it! Our wonderful wives
kept us supplied with hot coffee in between their visits to the other
stores in the mall.
Being somewhat rural Mac users we were pleasantly surprised by the size
of the crowd. We met a lot of fellow Mac fans and had some great
conversations, mostly centering around what we thought would be the
'next big thing' at MacWorld SF. There was, of course, the obligatory
grumbling about the long wait but it passed quickly with what were,
admittedly, complete strangers. The Mac community is rightfully famous
for being friendly.
The other welcome surprise was the absolute beauty of the store itself.
All of the merchandise was very well displayed and the staff seemed to
be much more knowledgeable than we expected. We also noted that many
people in the crowd seemed to be 'switchers' in one form or another.
Several folks remarked that they were amazed at what the Mac OS had to
offer. There were also a full array of peripherals (cameras, video
cameras, printers, scanners, software, etc.) prominently displayed.
Santa Barbara to San Francisco is a longer trip than the one we took but
I think you'll have your love for our favorite platform completely
renewed by the experience.
BTW: if you can swing it for time and $$$, I heartily recommend the
Sunday Brunch at the Sheraton Palace Hotel. It's a very elegant place
and the food is excellent...the perfect complement to a visit to the new
Apple store!
Sorry for the length of this message but, as you can imagine, I'm enthused!
