Hey Evan (et al)
I used to have the same mentality as you in regards to dues. MacRIT,
is Rochester Institute of Technology's user group and starting last
year, winter quarter we implemented a dues fee. Dues is $2/ quarter or
$5 for the year. Anyone is able to still join our group for no charge.
Dues buys members the ability to vote in elections and be admitted to
special sections of our message board forum including (membership
discussion and more importantly User Group Discounts). The money that
we receive from dues is not much, but allows us to purchase some small
things such as pizza and other goodies throughout the year.
Everyone in our user group has not been opposed the the idea of dues.
Especially in a college setting, people get busy with their schoolwork
and other activities and sometimes forget about being a consistent
member of the user group. Implementing dues has helped that. So...
dues or no dues... its up to you! For us.. it has worked well.
