As a campus user group run predominantly by students, WiscMUG does not
charge dues and probably never will. We gratefully accept donations,
whether they be monetary or of other form like hardware/software, but
since the group is at least half students, and money for a student is
tight, there's no place for dues.
We are lucky to have as many people contribute as they do, and I'd say
we do better than just get by. Now, it helps that we don't have to pay
for webspace, some advertising, and meeting places by the nature of a
"student organization," and we have also never applied for a grant from
the student government. There's a ton of red tape to cut through along
that front though, and for the most part, my time might be better spent
updating the website to a less neglected state.
I'm a strong believer that, in a campus or school setting, dues should
not be a part of the equation because it's all about an extension of
the quality of education at the UW.
