Hi Elsa,
JoMacs has never had to make the transition from print to virtual NL
because there was no NL when I first got involved with the group.
We upload to the site, and send out a notice to our members that the NL
is available - it's behind the special "members only" door of the site,
so they have to log in to get it.
Our NL isn't huge, at the moment 6 pages, and slowly growing (started
w/ 4 pages), so as a pdf we're usually around 300 to 400 kb. On the
page where we list the NL's, we also show the size of each issue so the
folks on dial up know how long of a break to take.
Pro's & con's, our group in particular isn't really dealing w/ any
cons. Before I got involved, membership was a very loose term, so we
got a membership program rolling, and you had to pay to get the
benefits. All of our members (under the paid membership) have access to
email, so we don't really have the issue of folks not having access to
the members only areas of the site. I guess since our group has never
had to deal with any other way of doing things, we've quelled the
complaints.
For the pro side - we do the NL in inDesign, & creating the PDF is a
simple export. We don't have to hassle with getting a copy to the
printer, reaching a print deadline & then mailing it out. I've just
passed the NL editor hat on to another member, but while I was editor,
if I wrapped up the NL at midnight, members had an email in their inbox
the next morning letting them know the NL had been published & they
could go get it.
As far a format, we work to stay away from long columns where you'd
have to scroll all the way down the page, then back up to the next
column - the only time we break that rule is if we have a review that
needs the full page. We work off of a 3 "column" layout, and block
shorter articles into 2 column blocks (short & squat layout instead of
vertical). And, we try to keep articles to a single page so that you're
not having to scroll back & forth to read a complete article.
I haven't heard much of anything negative from the NL, but then again,
I haven't asked. An easy way to find out is to send a mailing to our
members & ask for their feedback.
Cheers!
Chris Kiltz
