Dear Joe,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed response! I'm
especially
interested in the way you migrated members to your listserv.
If you would, could you please post this response to the discussion
list?
Then everyone can benefit from your group's experience.
Thanks a lot!
Elsa
Hey thanks Elsa,
Our VP Internal Carol Johnson was able to tell me which of our dues
paying members were not on the listserv. I had exported the list member
emails and Carol cross referenced them.
Our MUG uses Yahoo! as our listserv and Yahoo! has a very convenient
way to invite people to join your list. (This is only with
administrative privileges.)
I copied and pasted the list of email addresses into the send window
and in the body of the email I wrote a brief explanation of what the
list had to offer and the different subscription options.
Special notices only would be emails of, member only deals, and
information about general meetings and SIGs. Special notice emails are
sent out by me only. The other options are individual emails and digest
format. I also pointed out the very helpful nature of list subscribers
and recommended subscribing to get assistance with pre OS X issues as
well as the latest stuff.
The email is sent out as a HTML Yahoo! invite with my message in the
body and a "Join Now" link that automatically subscribes them to the
list and allows them to select which mode of delivery they want.
This was pretty successful. Not all subscribed. The invite is good for
7 days and I sent out one more after 7 days of the first. Some emailed
invites bounced. Most due paying members are now subscribed to the
list.
We now continue to promote the list serve at each meeting and have a
sign in sheet for attendees which we will use in a future invite to
join the list.
Having the options of subscribing to the list is very helpful. Another
option is to subscribe and NOT receive any emails. This type of
subscriber could access the list email via the Yahoo TRoU web site
after logging in. Very few people have chosen that option.
We have been growing steadily in due paying membership and in listserv
subscriptions since moving our meeting venue to the Apple Store.
There also has been a change in our membership due to some of our long
standing members not moving on to OS X either because their existing
Macs cannot handle the system, they do not want to change, or because
they cannot afford to make the transition with updating existing
programs to the OS X format. The newer members are using Jaguar or
Panther and are able to get the most benefit from our presentations.
One member is already vocalizing that he will most likely not be
rejoining because he is blind, and the major software company that he
has relied upon will no longer be supporting the Mac platform and
leaves him without a way to use OS X.
It is been vitally important to us to draw new members and to stream
line our expenses and have more interaction with our members through
out the month.
The list serve proved invaluable in organizing our very large move of
Macs for the Mac recycled program.
We now have a separate listserv for the TRoU board of directors so we
can communicate about on going issues and plans throughout the month.
