If our MUG could be granted one wish, we would love to find some magical
formula to somehow get us accepted as a Recognised Mac User Group.
Around 9 months ago we were knocked back for being too small (no meetings,
family members listed as contacts etc) to be a standard group. We could
understand the decision. We decided since we cater to members nationally
that becoming an online group is a better way to go. To that end we have
worked ever since adding more services. Australia is a huge country and in
some places it would be more than a 1000 kilometres to the nearest MUG or
Apple dealer. We thought we could provide a national MUG that could cater
not just for users in the major capital cities but for these remote users as
well.
I've been involved in the local MUG scene for over 10 years and understood a
lot of the problems other local MUG's had getting support in Australia and
decided our group would do something to change this situation. We set up
forums for discussions for all the other Australian MUG's, publicized their
meetings on our sites calendars, published special news items on our front
page occasionally, organized working with vendors to make special offers
available to all local MUG's, built up a rapport with the other MUG's and
recently put together a group of MUG leaders nationally to discuss ways to
help each other and only this week I was invited to speak at another local
MUG.
We didn't ignore our own members. They have their own forums, games area,
downloads, news items, chat areas, tutorials, faq's & member support. We've
also recently started to offer group training sessions twice monthly and are
looking into possibly introducing Moodle based online training. When a
member needs help we do all we can to help. Sometimes this involves hunting
down hardware/software for old unsupported Macs Australia wide. Whatever it
takes to keep our members happy. We had over a hundred members and thought
we'd be accepted with no problems.
Unfortunately we got knocked back again the reason being we weren't an
individual MUG but instead an association of MUG's. The trouble is nobody
told us we were an association. We were just a MUG trying to help other
MUG's. So as I said in the beginning, I'd like to wish for a magical MUG
acceptance formula because we haven't been able to figure out how to get
recognized yet & that last rejection led to us loosing 6 members upset that
our rejection meant they couldn't access official Apple MUG resources or
special offers etc. I know there's no real magic formula , but at least I
can dream.
