This discussion has centered on how to design a logo that doesn't use an
Apple trademarked logo or word...which is a sad commentary on the
relationship between Apple and the user groups in general.
There was a time when Apple nurtured and supported the user groups
because they clearly needed our advocacy for the platform; apparently
they no longer feel that they need us so they are prepared to throw the
baby out with the bath water.
The draconian measures Apple seems to be prepared to take to enforce
their copyrights are probably unnecessary. I doubt seriously that any
among us would denigrate the logo and probably would use it to Apple's
best advantage. Certainly our appreciation for Apple and its products
cannot be questioned.
With spamming and phishing running rampant over the internet, I
certainly can understand Apple's desire to protect its intellectual
property rights. But, as you can imagine, those who would use the logo
or trademarked words don't really care too much about the law anyway.
What I would like to see Apple do is develop a simple user agreement
that would allow user groups to make use of the logo with the clear
understanding that it would be only for 'official' purposes. It wouldn't
hurt one bit if the logo were to be worn proudly by any of us as
advocates for the company and its products; quite the contrary. Apple
has enjoyed tremendous growth recently and it would be a nice gesture if
they'd let us share a little in that newly found recognition.
Think of it as a small token of Apple's appreciation for our undying
support during those tough times we all endured.
Are you listening, Apple?
Thanks for the bandwidth to rant...
