Dale,
I suspect it has more to do with US Government regulations, than
internal Apple decisions. "Uncle Sam" has some strange ideas about
things like this. No logical person can figure him out.

I think you give Apple too much credit here, Bill. Hiding behind "Uncle Sam" is
just a poor excuse. Anyway, wouldn't Apple be unable to sell any Macs at all in
Australia if your argument were true?
Australia is a major western economy currently giving substantial support to the
US in the Asia Pacific region, Iraq and in political matters (John Howard,
Australian Prime Minister has similar right wing political views to George Bush).
Apple's woeful International support has been discussed on this forum before.
Uncle Sam certainly does not insist that for instance, no English should be used
on the Apple website in Switzerland (a country with a 20% immigrant and
international population), or that no Apple sales newsletters sent to me as a
result of having bought an English specification Mac can be sent in my native
tongue (I have to pretend to be in a different country to be able to read these).
It would be typical of the level of Apple's global geographic knowledge to lump
Australia into the same region as Communist China and muslim Indonesia just
because they partly share the same time zone and then blame "Uncle Sam" for
their ignorance.
I may be wrong, but from what I can tell, Apple has a poor reputation when
supporting non-US users.
