Like Matt said, which evidently has been missed, this hack does use
the Apple supplied Airport cards which are built in. But Apple
doesn't manufacture their own chips for use in these cards - they use
third parties. This hack exploits the particular chip set that Apple
(and other manufacturers) use. This is why, again like Matt said, this
is not Mac specific.
OK, again, I might have missed something, I'll watch the video again,
but, I though the exploit was found in a chipset used by 3rd party
hardware devices and using Apple's drivers. I don't remember any claim
the these chipsets were the same as in the Airport extreme card. (if
they were, why not demo it!?!)
They have admitted that some devices they tried have not panned out.
In fact these two "security researchers" attached a 3rd party hardware
device and hacked into a Mac. Now they are darlings. Never mind the
fact that they attached a 3rd party device to a Mac that no one would
ever actually attach to a Mac book. Who is putting a USB WIFI connector
on a MacBook?
Look I understand their point, who is to say Apple won't use this
chipset in the future, and, our group has a few users that still use a
P1 iBook or Pismo - can't get their hands on a original Airport Card
and might consider a USB connector.
But, from what I have seen in the video demo of this hack, it is the
same as bank robber telling the bank, "if you put this combination on
the vault, I can break in"
(Or better, the bank robber saying - I know a special combination to
your vault, if you set your vault to it, I'll be able to break in"
Newspaper reports - Bank Robber Knows Vault Combination, Is Your Stuff
Safe?)
Bottom line, it is being widely report the Airport Cards are being
hacked (even the cult of Mac Blog reports this) But, from the video I
saw, that is not what happened.
Good News, it seems that this is a problem that might be resolved
within the Apple drivers. I bet Apple distributes a patch soon.
