"Vicious"! Frankly, I'd disregard any 'help' of that sort in just
about any endeavor! ;-)
Here are some of my opinions ( I'll send you my snail mail address
privately, so you can send the check ):
1. Support web standards, even if Apple doesn't. It just might encourage them!
2. Develop a standard 'template' for all pages. That should include a
navigation system that is the same on all pages. With only a few
pages, it can be as simple as "Home", "MUG Facts", "Meeting Times",
"Board Members", etc. Just keep it simple and short enough to be
visible on all pages.
3. Use these links to open new pages in the same window. It can
easily confuse people when they end up with several windows open at
the same time. As hard as it is to believe, many don't think about
closing an un-needed window. The normal method to return to the
previous page is the Back button. But if you have the suggested
'navigation system' you can go from any page to any other page, in
any order, without having more than one window open. Another reason
to use this 'system' is that it allows people to bookmark a favorite
page and still be able to access the entire site.
4. Try to learn a little Cascading Style Sheet technique. It will
allow you to create that common 'atmosphere' of each page very
easily. It will also allow you to avoid using tables unless you need
to display data. It really can be as simple as basic HTML.
5. View your site with and without javascript enabled. Many of us
have that disabled by default. It can be a security risk but it is
also used by many sites to track where we've been and what we looked
at. Just not info I feel is anyone's business but mine ( unless they
want to pay me for it! ;-) ).
6. View your site in as many browsers as possible. Even Mac users use
FireFox, Camino, and many other browsers than Safari. If some
Internet Explorer users complain about the site, suggest they upgrade
to a 'modern', web standards compliant browser. :-)
7. Use graphics for 'flash' and _NOT_ for text info. Text can be
enlarged and shrunk in 99% of the browsers in use today. Graphics
cannot. If you have people viewing your site but cannot read the text
because the info is in a graphic, they are plain out of luck. Oops!
8. Most people expect to need _vertical_ scrolling on a page. But
they also detest the need to scroll _horizontally_. If your page
won't fit on an 800 X 600 screen without _horizontal_ scrolling, I
feel there is something wrong with the design. That's just my
opinion, of course. But you can never be sure what size window ( much
less screen ) a user has, so don't try to force them to do more work
just because you think of the web like printing on paper.
9. When anyone complains about the site, ask them to offer
suggestions on exactly how to improve it. It's a great opportunity to
get a member to participate or maybe get someone to join the MUG! :-)
Our MUG 'site' is only a few pages on contributed server space, slow
to be updated, not really much control by the group.
BTW, I'll attempt to send you a screen shot of the home page as I see
it in FF. I say 'attempt' because I sometimes see my 'private' posts
ending up in the digest! :headbash: 8-)
Keep up,the good work!
