"Postcard" Spam
Thank you for your inquiries about the "Postcard" spam.
Over the past week we've received many inquiries from UG readers
which prompted us to begin tracking "Postcard" spam. The spam
traps have been tracking approx. 6 each 8-hour period since
Wednesday.
These potentially dangerous emails with a subject like:
> You've received a greeting card from a school-mate...
> You've received a postcard from a school friend!
> You've received a postcard from a family member!
Sites such as NetFunCards.Com and GreetingCards.Com, among others
are being spoofed, and are not the sender of the spam.
Although the files are .exe executable Windows files, and
present no harm to Mac users, they do contain stealth IP
trackers. This means your IP will be tagged as having looked
at the email, and/or clicked.
We became more concerned when tracking IP blocks because the
servers involved are located in Egypt, Iran, and Palestine.
Reputable "postcard" sites will include the sender's name
or email address, and/or, your name.
Less dangerous : PDF SPAM
We've also had a number of inquiries about email labeled: "PDF"
This is a new ploy by the "Pump & Dump" stock spammers to
evade detection from the spam traps.
Typically, the spam subject is very simple, such as:
. FWD: report.pdf
. status.pdf
If you don't know the sender, don't open the email.
These are a nuisance, but harmless.
