- To non-US UG heads - what is your stance on the whole iPhone
unlocking thing?
Have you seen the price for an unlocked iPhone in Germany? 999€ -
which is like $1,500 - then you still need to pay for service, which
would probably mean many of the iPhone's features would be useless.
The thing is, most phones sold here are unlocked, though you usually
have to agree to a service contract to get them (the phone) at a
discounted price. But you could, at any time, put another providers
SIM in and have no problems. At least that has been my experience
with Vodafone, T-Mobile and Klarmobile in Germany.
What's caused some problems for some of our members is that we have US
iTunes accounts (US citizens stationed here in Germany). But to
activate an iPhone bought here in Germany, some of them have had to
establish accounts at the German iTunes store, which then means you
can't copy songs/video from your US iTunes account to your German
iPhone. I haven't had to deal with this yet, but a co-worker of mine
just went through this Friday when they went on sale.
As for the other parts of this discussion - you may notice that we
changed the name from KMUG to KAUG. We focus on Apple products -
predominately the Mac, but we've had iPod and TV questions come up
in meetings. We've had a few Apple/PC users there but all but one
have switched to the Mac since attending.
