Is my public library is forcing me into a life outside the law?
No, he could buy it. He could even resell it when he is done with it,
or donate it to the library that apparently would benefit from another
copy. It would have to be the right sort of license in order for the
library to re-loan it, but libraries also use donated items in book
sales to raise operating capital. He could look into alternatives such
as Audible.com to buy legal downloads instead of ripping illegal
copies. A quick Google search showed me another audiobook service that
does rentals, although it is a service with which I am unfamiliar. He
could wait until it is less popular and more available. There are many
alternatives, hence he is not forced.
