Dave,
I agree *and* disagree with you on this. (and I know you were being
facetious with regard to part of it, too)
I agree that your questions were valid, because I'd like to know the same
things. It's a shame they were only answered off-list to you, instead of in
public. We couldn't possibly be the only two who wanted to know how the User
Groups are structured, and where they fall into the organization at Apple.
Seems reasonable enough.
I disagree that the banter is off-topic, and I like how the ideas are being
fleshed out. Obviously there was some details left out of the original post,
and I wish we were shown more, but we weren't. Seems a bunch of people went
into protect mode on both sides of the question, then people's feelings got
hurt, things were exaggerated, then people said get back on-topic, and some
threatened to leave the list. It's a cycle of many topics on a mailing list,
almost predictable. I still want to see how it ends up, rather than having a
list member invoking some unwritten rule that they are the only ones that
can end discussion on a topic.
To bring it back to the purpose of this list, our group does not do any
"official" technical support for members, or non-members. If you have a
question, ask our list, or bring it to a meeting. Of the 35 or so people
there, someone will be able to help you. We do not condone pirating of
software and we certainly don't facilitate it. We have software developers
who are in our group, and I'm not about to let their livelihoods be
threatened by any member, "well-meaning" or not. We also have consultants,
myself being one, that do this for a living. I do not install software on
clients' computers that they do not legally own, and from what I know of the
others, they don't either. Pat (the OP) had reason to suspect that one of
her clients had this done to them. It also appeared to her to have been done
by a MUG officer. Her question was one of ethics, as I believe she's well
aware of the legality, since the law and ethics are not mutually exclusive.
I believe her question was whether others believed it ethical. I can only
speak for myself, and I do not believe it was ethical. The issue should
probably be best addressed by the individual group's board. But it was not
off-topic for this list.
