As a passionate defender of the "freedom of speech" thing, a couple of
comments in favor of keeping this a moderated list:
Many people speak most freely when they know their opinions won't
receive an offensive or objectionable response. Some people /only/
speak freely in such an environment. It's kind of like a meeting when
people start shouting each other down: lots of anger and aggression,
not much free discussion.
There is no quicker way to kill a list like this than to let go of
civility. The people who want to exchange information and opinions
will go elsewhere. Thanks to the Internet, there's /always/ an
"elsewhere"!
There are plenty of forums and lists where people can vent. I think
this one serves its purpose best focussed and friendly.
And anyway, people who are both passionate AND civil make the most
convincing arguments :)

I am mildly embarrassed to say that I don't see a problem with the
discourse (and most of the rancor) generated by any list.
The underlying theme is passion. Passionately for, or against,
something and our willingness to discuss (or, at least, listen to) a
position is what advances us.
I learned long ago that most of the time people say something
offensive or objectionable it is not directed "personally" at me.
Besides learning things I never knew before, it helps me get clearer
on what I do believe. I guess its a 'freedom of speech' thing.
As Forrest would have said, "Stupid is as stupid does." Or as Henry
Fonda said in the Rounders, "Whatever suits you just tickles me
plumb to death."
