I won't get too involved in the discussion for obvious reasons, but I
will say, yes I do find that it often reminds of high school. There
is the "in" group and the "out" group of the User Group community. I
know my group is on the "out" side, so we keep our head low and our
voice soft. The older you are and the longer you've been in the user
group community, the closer to the "in" group you get. The cycle
perpetuates itself. It is interesting that the Mac is the computer
for the "rest of us". I guess in 30 or 40 years I'll be an insider as
well.
FWIW, we just started allowing a nominal membership fee in order to
get some members to feel ownership and give them voting rights in what
happens with the group. Location, prizes, projector, computer, web
hosting are all provided by group members. I was amazed at the
positive response we got in having $10 yearly dues. We also have a
"tip" jar for people to pitch in.
I suggest often that groups tap into the talent and resources of their
members, whether it's the church, a business networking group or user
group. Too often people look outside when everything they need is
within.
