Thanks so much for the thoughts,
There were some ideas I had never thought of.
As Tony mentioned, it takes a lot of time to be a group leader and
Jason is right that leaders who stay when they are ready to move on
can end up feeling resentful. I suspect every one on the list agreed
with Rick's comment that some folk will even complain when a leader
shows the insensitivity to unexpectedly die before doing the program
or swap meet they'd promised : )
One theme seems to be getting new members via articles in the local
media (both Jerry's and Carol's groups do this), and Amaya's comment
about having a strong supporting mailing list / membership, providing
a way for new leaders to emerge even as the core group meets supports
the idea of adding members and increasing possibilities. As Jerry
said, watching for expertise at meetings or on discussion lists can
help identify possible talent, even if for a single preso or training
session. With Jason's "plenty of warning" each of the ideas could
generate new leadership.
The newsletter ideas are great! Like many leaders, I tend to make the
mistake of thinking, "But it's always been done this way..." Rick's
blog suggestion could be a huge time saver, especially with an open
schedule. Jerry's suggestion to drop the newsletter entirely is
interesting, especially in light of using a discussion list as a
replacement.
Most of all, though, were the comments asking why we do things. Years
ago someone said that computer user groups would die off because
computers would become appliances, that nobody has a user group for a
toaster. Dunham's point is spot on: if a meeting is fun and
interesting, the excitement can be catching. Members can find info on
the web; they come to enjoy being part of a community that has fun via
shared interests.
The gatherings I remember most are the ones where fun, excitement and
humor were all present. Rick's leadership of AOL's original User Group
Forum was notable because of his humor and thoughtfulness. Amaya's UG
liaison work for Apple is successful because she connects with people
on a personal level. Jerry's comment about the sponge, Tony's wife,
and Rick's "snore factor" remarks are the sorts of things that make us
smile and bring us back for that next meeting.
Thanks much,
Sandy
