Well, one is a sub-set of the other. Automator actions are "pre-scripted"
AppleEvents.
An Apple engineer on the AppleScript team had this to say (paraphrased):
AppleScript is like using a full Lego set, while Automator is like using big
Duplo blocks.
The point is that AS is quite granular (a sand pile) while Automator is
pre-made bricks (you can see the sand, but...)
With InDesign or any other application with a large and well-formed
dictionary of AS commands, you will find much more use with AppleScript.
That doesn't mean that certain "chunks" of your overall workflow can not be
"reused" and made into Automator actions.
The peculiarities and complexities of publishing tend to suggest a more
refined approach: AppleScript. There are well-established coding sources
and plenty of users to working through the oddities of any dictionary will
not be a problem with that application.
