I want to record an action to add to a workflow which will change the

Recording it by mouse-selecting Formatd > Paragraph and then double

hitting return (OK) does not work.

Can Automator cope with this kind of thing - stepping through a menu?

It seems unable to open a pull down menu in Word

I believe you'll have to use an applescript action in Automator. While I don't have MS Word, I do have Pages. Pages' Applescript dictionary has such a command. It's called 'Line Spacing Type'.

Hope this helps a bit.
