o What language/fonts are currently available for MacOS X/Cocoa? I have
found a small set in a few directories (see below), but can I install
additional ones? MacOS 9 gave me the option to install a wide variety
of languages.
o Can additional language/fonts be downloaded from well known sites?
o Once the OS is aware of a certain language/font, can it be used with
any Cocoa AppKit object that displays an NSString? In other words, if I
can somehow set an NSString to an Arabic word using appropriate unicode,
will an NSTextField (or other object) display it correctly?
o Once I figure out how to install another language such as Arabic, will
Internet Explorer automatically figure out how to display it?
Background:
I installed Office X the other day, and the font pull down menu in Word
said I could use Arabic (actually various flavors of Arabic... I think
it picked them up from the Classic System font folder). I tried to use
them, but Word could complained that the system did not support the
font.
Next I looked at a Unicode.org page that includes a number sample
languages
http://www.unicode.org/unicode/standard/WhatIsUnicode.html
But Internet Explorer was unable to display Arabic (or many of the other
languages).
[Since Arabic is a right-to-left language in which character displays
are different depending on the location in a word, I thought it would be
a good test case.]
What I have tried:
o I located a number of font folders including
/Library/Fonts
/System/Library/Fonts
[classic system folder]/Fonts (includes some arabic)
o I found a TechNote (TN2029) that said Apple fixed a problem with
Arabic display in MaxOS 10.1, so I while I now have greater hope, I
still haven't found how *I* can install/use Arabic.
o I found some notes on Apple Type Services (ATS), but it seems aimed at
Carbon but not Cocoa.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Todd
