Thanks for all the replies. None of them helped unfortunately. However, I
have found the problem and the solution so I'll let you all know in case it
comes to get you one day.
The airport software (recently updated) is interfering with the DHCP on my
cable modem. Delete all the offending Airport software and it all works
again!
FYI I'm in the UK using Telwest BlueYonder as my cable service provider.
