Given that the full Developer Tools .dmg is around 100-120MB in size,
would developers still find it useful to have such a large download
available via Software Update? Also, are developer updates something
that developers would find they want to access via Software Update
(since currently you can't store the updater separately for later use)?
Note: I can't promise anything, but I am curious to know if developers
in general would want such an option and why (compared to making it
available via the ADC).
I do not think that size is much of an issue here. Downloading it from
ADC doesn't make the disk image any smaller in comparison to using
Software Update ;-)
The only size related issue that I can think of is that Software Update
should allow to resume a download in case it got interrupted (like ftp
does), or else somebody with a slow modem on a bad line might never be
able to download all of it.
I assume that Software Update won't work if you want to continue to tie
the download to an ADC account.
I have three major issues with Software Update, though, that would make
it less desirable at the moment to use Software Update for distribution
of the developer tools:
1.
I can't see what I'm about to install. Software Update should provide
both a description of what the update is going to change and a list of
changed, deleted, and added files. Possibly, the latter should be
optional, because not everybody will want to delve that deep into detail.
2.
An update should be optional (in the sense that I should be able to
specify that I'm not interested in a certain update). If I specify this,
Software Update should stop offering such an update to me.
3.
Software Update should let me retain the downloaded file. After having
downloaded it on one machine, Software Update should offer to either
install the update, and/or save the package to the file system for later
use on other machines. A double click on the downloaded package could
then launch Software Update for a local installation.
