I know what you mean. Internet Connect does this, when you hit the button that shows more detail.
There isn't a standard UI item that implements this behaviour, but it wouldn't be that tough to write. NSWindow has various -setFrame:... methods that you can use to resize a window.

Many years ago at Filoli, I wrote a CollapsibleBox class which would expand and collapse when you hit an arrow icon, and could resize the window it was in and move anything that would get crowded when the box expanded. Maybe I should update that and put it on an IB palette.
