See NSSplitView
See Interface Builder's Layout->Group In->Split View right next to Group
In->Scroll View and Group In->Box.

I don't mean to pick on you personally, but I am wondering why you could not
find this in the documentation ?
You even had the term "split". I simple search on split reveals the answer.
http://developer.apple.com/cgi-bin/search.pl?q=split&ie=utf8&oe=utf8&restric
t=(cocoa)

specifically

jC_classic/Classes/NSSplitView.html

I also wonder why you assumed that IB does not support this ?
