List of icons like Startup Disk

As my very first Cocoa project, I'm working on a preference pane in which
I'd like do to something like the scrolling list of icons seen in the
Startup Disk pane, only displayed vertically instead of horizontally. I've
tried opening the Startup Disk nib file, but the scrolling view just shows
up as a big gray box.
I gather I'm supposed to do something with NSTableView, but I'm not sure
where to go from there. Can anyone give me some pointers?
