WindowDepthLimit default; Depth vs. performance

  • Subject: WindowDepthLimit default; Depth vs. performance

Is there still a default you can set that will limit
an application to a particular window depth?

If so, can it be used to set a limit to 8-bit gray?
(For that matter, will OS X ever support 8-bit gray
depth in System Preferences->Displays, the way
OS 9 does?)

Would lowering screen depth or an app's depth limit
improve speed or lower memory requirements to any useful
degree?
