Mail.app activity viewer?!

I want to have something similar to the Mail.app activity viewer, but I don't know what I should use to do that? Is it just a custom NSView in an NSScrollView? Or is it an NSTableView? Can something like that be done in an NSTableView?

Any suggestions would be nice, basically this is for some sort of download manager.
